About Indigenous Environmental Network

The Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN), based in Bemidji, Minnesota, is a grassroots organization dedicated to addressing environmental and economic justice issues affecting Indigenous communities across North America and globally. Since its establishment in 1990, IEN has developed comprehensive capacity-building programs that empower tribal governments and Indigenous communities to protect sacred sites, land, water, air, and natural resources while promoting sustainable economic development.

IEN's multifaceted approach includes maintaining an informational clearinghouse that serves as a critical resource hub for Indigenous peoples facing environmental challenges. The organization organizes strategic campaigns, direct actions, and public awareness initiatives designed to create tangible environmental and health protections for Indigenous communities. IEN provides expert technical assistance in environmental campaign strategy, policy development initiatives, and community capacity building that addresses environmental justice issues at local, tribal, state, regional, national, and international levels.

Through its annual Protecting Mother Earth Gatherings, IEN convenes Indigenous leaders, youth, and community members to develop collaborative strategies and build alliances with inter-tribal organizations, people-of-color groups, faith-based organizations, environmental advocates, and labor unions. The organization excels at connecting grassroots voices with policy-making processes and providing essential support, resources, and referrals to Indigenous communities and youth throughout North America. IEN's work extends to fostering dialogue on climate change, energy justice, and the rights of Indigenous peoples, positioning Bemidji, Minnesota as a vital hub for Indigenous environmental advocacy and community empowerment.
