About Native Women's Association of Canada

The Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC), based in Gatineau, QC, is a national Indigenous organization dedicated to advancing the political voice and rights of Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse people across Canada. Since 1974, NWAC has served First Nations communities both on and off reserve, as well as Métis and Inuit populations, working to enhance the social, economic, cultural, and political well-being of Indigenous women within their respective communities and broader Canadian society.

NWAC engages in comprehensive advocacy, policy analysis, and legislative reform efforts aimed at promoting equality for Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse individuals, including LGBTQ+ communities. The organization addresses a diverse range of critical issues including employment and labour rights, business development, health services, violence prevention and safety initiatives, justice and human rights protections, environmental concerns, early learning and childcare access, and international affairs. Through evidence-based policy work and strategic advocacy, NWAC works to preserve Indigenous culture while advancing the well-being of Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse people alongside their families and communities.

With established governance structures, decision-making processes, and financial policies developed over five decades, NWAC maintains strong networks and partnerships across the country. The organization operates with a foundation rooted in Indigenous ancestral laws, spiritual beliefs, languages, and traditions, functioning as a collective voice for Indigenous women's rights and community advancement throughout Gatineau, QC and across the nation.
